Bologna

Bologna_city-of-fine-arts

The city’s nickname is “La Dotta” – “the learned one” – and this comes from its university, incidentally the oldest in Europe. Amongst the unique landmarks in the enclosed medieval city are the picturesque arcades in front of the magnificent “palazzi”. It was no surprise that Bologna was European Capital of Culture in 2000. For a taste of the Italian zest for life visit the Via Zamboni in the evening with its many student pubs. Tip: go up the Torre Asinelle when the weather’s good and get a view over the faraway Alps.
